Drilling and Tapping Centers: VTC-600 to VTC-700 Series Guide

The VTC-600 to VTC-700 drilling and tapping center series runs 20000 rpm BT30 spindles and 21-tool magazines for 3C and small precision parts.

A drilling and tapping center is a purpose-built machine for one job profile: many small holes, many taps, fast cycles. VITOP Machinery's VTC series covers three models, VTC-600 to VTC-700, built for 3C parts and small to medium precision components. It is not a general-purpose VMC, and that is exactly why it beats one in this niche. Here is the specification and how to judge it against your parts.

Why BT30 and 20000 rpm Matter Here

Small holes want small tools, and small tools want speed. A 6 mm drill reaches sensible surface speed near 10000 rpm in aluminium; a 3 mm tap or a 2 mm end mill wants more. The 20000 rpm BT30 spindle, with an electric spindle option, covers that band, while the light taper means fast tool changes and low spinning-mass for quick acceleration between hole positions. The 5.5 kW power figure looks small next to a VMC, but hole-making cuts rarely load more than that.

Where the Series Fits

  • 3C electronics parts: phone and laptop housings, brackets, connector blocks
  • Small aluminium and steel components with dense hole patterns and threads
  • Fluid manifold blocks and small plates that are mostly drilled and tapped
  • Secondary hole operations after milling on a larger machine

The compact footprint, roughly 2800 to 3500 kg per machine, also makes the series attractive for cell layouts: two or three VTC machines can replace one overloaded VMC in a hole-heavy workflow, at similar total cost.

Choosing Between VTC-600 and VTC-700

The difference is envelope. The VTC-600 gives 600 mm of X travel on a 700x420 table; the VTC-700 extends X to 700 mm. If your largest plate is 550 mm or less, the smaller model is enough; if you run 650 mm parts, take the bigger model. Z travel of 300 to 350 mm covers the typical plate work in this class. Controls come as Mitsubishi M80VB or Syntec, so match the control your setters already know.

If most of your cycle time is spent drilling and tapping rather than milling pockets, moving that work to a dedicated tapping center is one of the fastest capacity gains available per dollar spent.

Production Thinking: Cycles, Tooling and People

Work out your real hole count before comparing machines. Take your busiest part, add up every drill, spot drill, chamfer and tap, then multiply by batch size per week. On 3C work that number often exceeds 5000 cycles a day, which is why the 21-tool magazine and fast BT30 changes matter more here than spindle horsepower ever will. Tap holders and tension-compression setups should be part of the initial tooling order, not an afterthought.

Programming effort stays low on this class of machine. Hole patterns cycle well with canned routines on either the Mitsubishi M80VB or Syntec control, and a setter familiar with any VMC is productive within days. Plan coolant carefully for tapping: consistent concentration and chip flushing decide tap life more than any parameter change. And if you run two or three of these machines in a cell, stagger tool loads so a worn tap in one unit does not stop the whole cell at once; a modest spare tool inventory covers most interruption risk.
