Horizontal Machining Centers: HMC-630 to HMC-1814L Series Guide

VITOP's horizontal machining center series spans nine models from HMC-630 to HMC-1814L for multi-face machining of box-type parts.

A horizontal machining center solves a problem vertical machines cannot: machining four sides of a box-type part in one setup, with chips falling away from the cut instead of packing into pockets. VITOP Machinery's horizontal series spans nine models from HMC-630 to HMC-1814L, so the range covers everything from small gearbox housings to large beds and frames. This guide summarises the series and helps you narrow down a size.

Why Buyers Move to Horizontal

The gain is setup economy. With the spindle pointing sideways and a pallet or rotary table carrying the part, one clamping reaches multiple faces. On a pump housing or gearbox case, that typically replaces two or three vertical operations, and every removed setup removes a stacking tolerance. Chip evacuation is the second advantage: gravity works with you on deep cavity milling, which keeps tools cooler and extends insert life in cast iron and steel.

Matching Size to Your Parts

Start from your largest casting. A 630x630 table handles most pump and valve bodies; 800x800 or 1000-class tables suit gearbox housings and small machine frames; the largest models with 2000 mm X travel take structural parts and long beds. Table load runs from 500 kg up to 3000 kg, so check fixture weight plus part weight, not just the part. Add 20-30% clearance to the envelope and the choice usually becomes obvious.

Spindle Choices in the Series

Spindle options span BT40-Φ150 for faster, lighter work through BT50-Φ155 and BT50-Φ190 for heavy cutting. Maximum speeds of 6000 or 8000 r/min cover cast iron and steel machining; a 12000 rpm option exists where aluminium components are in the mix. Motor power between 11 and 18.5 kW matches the taper choices, and ball screws of 5010 to 6316 specification scale with the model size.

Questions to Ask Before Ordering

  • How many faces does your typical part need, and will a rotary table replace those setups?
  • What is fixture-plus-part weight at the heaviest case?
  • Do you need chip conveyors and through-spindle coolant for deep drilling?
  • Which spindle taper matches the tooling you already own?

Bring drawings with those answers and a supplier can point you to the right model in the nine, rather than defaulting to the biggest one. For a parts shop moving from vertical-only production, a mid-series model is often the low-risk first horizontal.

Running a Horizontal Day to Day

Budget for the surroundings as seriously as the machine. Horizontals move several times the chip volume of an equivalent VMC, so a screw or chain chip conveyor, a larger coolant tank and a cleaning routine around the pallet area belong in the original purchase. Coolant condition deserves weekly attention, since chips held against castings by trapped swarf are the main cause of surface staining on finished housing faces.

Operator habits differ too. Because four faces finish in one setup, the fixture itself becomes a precision component: check its location surface on a surface plate at intervals, and treat any drop of a heavy casting onto the pallet as an accuracy event worth re-verifying. Shops that respect the fixture get years of repeatable multi-face work; shops that treat it as a clamp get drift they blame on the machine.
