L Series Vertical Machining Center: Up to 2000 mm X Travel

The VITOP L series VMC extends X travel to 2000 mm across 14 models, with BT40/BT50 spindle options plus table load up to 2000 kg.

Why Travel Range Decides the Machine

Most vertical machining centers stop at about 850 mm of X travel. Sooner or later a job shop meets a part that does not fit: a long mould base, a machine beam, an extrusion die, or twenty brackets that would be faster clamped side by side on one long table. The VITOP L series vertical machining center was built for exactly this situation. It covers 14 models, from the VMC-850L to the VMC-S20L, with worktable X travel stretching from 800 mm up to 2000 mm.

Travels, Tables and Load Capacity

The range is wide by design. Sliding saddle stroke (Y-axis) runs from 500 to 900 mm, and spindle box travel (Z-axis) from 500 to 1000 mm depending on the model. Worktables start at 1000 x 500 mm and go up to 900 x 2200 mm, with load capacity from 450 kg on compact models to 2000 kg on the largest. One series can therefore serve both a small electrode shop and a heavy structural-parts department.

ParameterSpecification
Worktable travel (X-axis)800 - 2000 mm
Sliding saddle stroke (Y-axis)500 - 900 mm
Spindle box travel (Z-axis)500 - 1000 mm
Worktable dimensions1000x500 up to 900x2200 mm
Worktable load capacity450 - 2000 kg
Positioning accuracy (X/Y/Z)±0.005/300 mm
Cooling box capacity240 - 480 L

Match the model to your largest workpiece plus 20-30% clearance for fixtures and tool overhang. If you routinely clamp multiple parts in one setup, size the table by total fixture footprint, not by single-part length alone.

BT40 or BT50: Spindle Choice Sets the Job Range

Smaller L models carry a BT40-Φ150 spindle, which suits mould finishing, electrode work and aluminium at moderate chip loads. The larger models step up to BT50 spindles with Φ155 through Φ190 installation diameters. Rated output torque across the series spans 48 to 143 N.m, and that number matters more than any brochure headline: higher spindle torque keeps heavy roughing cuts in steel and cast iron stable and protects tool life at the same time.

Accuracy on a Longer Table

Positioning accuracy is ±0.005/300 mm on all three axes. On a machine with a two-metre X axis, holding that consistency along the full stroke is what separates a usable VMC from a frustrating one. VITOP builds every machine on HT300 resin-sand castings with double ageing treatment, uses hand-scraped and matched guideways, and laser-verifies each machine with interferometry and ballbar testing before shipment. Ask for the test report of your actual machine, not a sample sheet.

Coolant and Floor Space

Cooling box capacity ranges from 240 to 480 L. The larger tanks earn their keep on long aluminium cycles and in hot, humid climates where coolant heats up fast and bacteria grow faster. Footprint is the other practical point: the largest models measure around 5260 x 3600 x 3600 mm. Check your floor plan, foundation and crane access before you commit to a specific model.

Where Shops Use the L Series

  • Long mould bases and half-mould machining where a standard VMC runs out of table.
  • Structural parts, brackets and plates machined in multi-part setups.
  • Steel and aluminium production where BT50 torque shortens roughing time.
  • Job shops that want one machine family covering both small and large parts.

For example, a mould shop cutting 1600 mm bumper-tool bases can run a full base in one setup on a mid-size L model instead of turning the part on an 850 mm machine. Fewer setups mean better parallelism between the two mould halves and less time lost to re-indication.

Choosing Your Model

Work through three questions in order. First, the size of your largest part, which sets the table. Second, the material and roughing depth, which decides BT40 versus BT50. Third, batch size, which tells you how much automation to plan for later. If you are torn between two models, send the drawings to VITOP and ask which travel and spindle combination fits; a short conversation usually settles it.
