Large-size BF two-speed gearbox variant for heavy-duty gantry machining centers, delivering high torque amplification for heavy cutting of big castings.

Some cutting jobs are simply brutal: facing a machine tool bed with deep allowances, roughing a large welded structure, machining a heavy casting where the first pass removes more metal than most machines see in a week. For that duty, VITOP offers the large-size BF gearbox, the heavy-duty variant of the BF two-speed gearbox for gantry machining center spindle drives. Its function is stated plainly in the specification: high torque amplification for heavy cutting.

Why a Large Version Exists

The standard BF gearbox covers the torque needs of typical gantry roughing. But torque demand does not scale gently with cutter size. Double the cutter diameter and depth of cut and the torque demand can multiply several times over. On the largest gantry machines cutting the largest workpieces, the drive needs more multiplication than a standard unit provides. The large BF gearbox exists for that margin: the same two-speed principle, sized for heavy-duty gantry applications and the cutting loads they generate.

Where the Big Unit Fits

  • Roughing large castings: machine bases, frames, press components
  • Machining welded structural fabrications with deep allowances
  • Heavy face milling on large plates in tough materials
  • Mould and die work with massive pocketing before finishing

The common thread is cutting at low spindle speeds with large cutters, where the spindle must deliver sustained torque hour after hour without the drive slowing down mid-cut. A stalled or slowing spindle does not just cost cycle time; it rubs the cutter instead of cutting, which burns insert edges and can spoil a large workpiece that has already accumulated many hours of value.

Torque, Speed and the Two Gears

Two-speed operation remains the logic. In low gear, torque is multiplied for the heavy passes, so the motor works in its efficient range while the cutter runs at the low surface speed heavy cutting demands. Shift to high gear for finishing, semi-finishing and lighter operations where faster spindle speeds give the surface finish. The pairing matters on large machines because a single-ratio drive forces a compromise: either the heavy cuts suffer or the finishing speeds do.

Deciding If You Need the Large Size

Bring real numbers to the decision. Write down your biggest regular roughing operation: cutter diameter, number of inserts in the cut, depth and width of cut, material. Compare the spindle time you spend on such operations against lighter work. If heavy roughing is a large share of machine hours, or your cutters are at the top of the machine's capacity, the large gearbox is the conservative and correct choice. If heavy cutting is occasional, the standard BF unit may cover you at lower cost.

It is also worth thinking forward. Shops rarely machine smaller parts as the years pass. If a future order book could include bigger castings or harder materials, specifying the larger drive now costs far less than retrofitting later.

Service and Long-Term Ownership

A gearbox-driven spindle is a mechanical system with gears, bearings and oil inside it, so treat it accordingly. Follow the oil change interval from the manual from day one; gear oil is cheap compared with a rebuild. Listen to the drive during the first weeks of running and note how it sounds in both gears, because a change in noise is usually the earliest warning you will get. Report vibration or overheating early rather than running through it, and keep a record of gear shifts in the programmes you run so any fault can be traced to the duty it actually saw.

Ordering and Support

The large BF gearbox is optional equipment configured with the machine's spindle drive at the factory, so the gearbox, spindle and control are matched as a system rather than assembled as an afterthought. When you request a quotation, send your drawings and describe your heaviest cutting operation in detail. We will confirm the right drive configuration for your gantry machining centre and the duty cycle you actually run.
