Moving-Column Gantry Machining Center for Large Plate Work

The VITOP ZX moving-column gantry series (ZX-2020 to ZX-2040) machines large plates up to 4200 mm travel with a fixed 2000 x 3100 mm table and BT50 spindle.

Long plates and structural parts create a specific problem: the workpiece is too big or too awkward to shuttle between machines, but a full-width gantry over the whole table would be wasteful. The VITOP moving-column gantry machining center (ZX-2020 to ZX-2040, three models) solves it by moving the column along the workpiece instead of moving a huge table under a fixed beam.

How the Moving-Column Layout Works

The table stays fixed at 2000 x 3100 mm with a 4500 kg load rating. The column travels front-to-back on the X axis, the saddle slides across on Y, and the headstock carries Z. On this series the X travel runs 2200 to 4200 mm depending on model, with 2000 mm of Y travel and 550 mm on Z, inside a 2200 mm gantry width.

For the operator this layout is practical: you clamp a long plate once, and the machine reaches along it. Cutting forces go straight down through the column into the bed, which is why this design handles plate edges and long profile milling well.

Cutting Performance

The BT50 spindle with a Φ155 mm installation diameter and 143 N.m of rated torque is built for face milling and heavy shoulder work on steel plate. Maximum tool capacity of Φ150 mm (or Φ200 mm with adjacent pockets empty) means you can run large face mills and shell mills without swapping to a smaller head. XYZ axis servo motors deliver up to 22.5 / 22.5 / 37.2 N.m, which keeps table and column moves positive under load.

At 8000 r/min this is not a high-speed finishing machine. It is a productive roughing and general milling platform for material removal on big parts, and shops that need mirror finishing usually pair it with a high-speed machine downstream.

Typical Applications

  • Engineering machinery parts: booms, frames, bed plates
  • Structural steel components needing milled datum faces and slots
  • Large flanges and welded assemblies that will not fit a VMC table
  • Mould base roughing where the plate is longer than 2 m

Before You Order

Check three things against your parts: longest dimension against the 2200-4200 mm X travel of each model, heaviest clamped weight against the 4500 kg table rating, and your hall's crane capacity against the 14-18 t machine weight. Foundation depth matters on moving-column machines because the column accelerates along the bed.

Comparing Fixed-Beam and Moving-Column Designs

If you are torn between a fixed-beam gantry and this moving-column layout, the deciding factors are usually workpiece shape and batching. A fixed-beam machine suits parts that sit inside a compact envelope and need repeated heavy cuts across the whole table. A moving-column machine wins when parts are long, clamping is awkward, and the spindle must reach along the workpiece. Maintenance access also differs: with the table fixed at working height, operators load large plates with better ergonomics and less crane time. Whichever layout you choose, the checks that matter stay the same - casting quality, guide scraping, and verified geometry. VITOP builds both designs on one site with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified systems, laser-verifies every machine before shipment, and supports OEM and ODM configurations when standard models do not fit your parts. Thirteen-plus years of in-house casting and assembly stand behind that.
