Precision Surface Grinder for Mould and Toolroom Work

Hydraulic precision surface grinder in three sizes, 618M/H to 306AHD/AS, with tables from 460 x 150 to 600 x 300 mm for mould plates, inserts plus toolroom finishing.

A surface grinder is the machine that makes everything else accurate. Mould plates seat flat, insert blocks square up, and gauges hold size because someone ground the reference surfaces first. The VITOP precision surface grinder line covers three sizes, 618M/H through 306AHD/AS, built as hydraulic machines for mould and toolroom finishing work.

Three Sizes for Toolroom Duty

The two smaller models use a 460 x 150 mm or 460 x 200 mm table, while the largest steps up to 600 x 300 mm. Longitudinal travel runs from 470 up to 660 mm and cross travel from 160 to 340 mm. The maximum distance from table to spindle centre is 410 or 370 mm on the small machines, 475 mm on the middle size and 600 mm on the largest, which sets how tall a workpiece can be under the wheel.

Hydraulic Table Movement

On these machines the table reciprocates hydraulically rather than by hand. For finishing work that matters: hydraulic traverse gives an even, repeatable stroke speed, so the surface finish stays consistent along the full length of the plate. Hand feeding a long pass inevitably varies, and that variation shows up on the finished face.

Wheels and Speeds

Wheel sizes range from 180 mm diameter with 3 to 13 mm width on the compact models up to a 350 x 40 x 127 mm wheel on the largest. Spindle speeds run between 1450 and 2850 rpm at 50 Hz depending on model. In practice, pick the wheel width to match the job: narrow wheels for grooves and shoulders, wider wheels for facing plate surfaces where you want the table covered in fewer passes.

What Shops Use It For

  • Facing mould plates and insert blocks flat and parallel
  • Grinding hardened details after heat treatment
  • Toolroom work: gauges, vee blocks, die sections
  • Squaring up parts before wire EDM or jig boring

Table load capacity reaches 420 kg on the largest model, measured with the chuck fitted, so a loaded magnetic chuck plus a heavy die block stays within range on the big machine. On the two smaller sizes, plan for lighter workpieces and use the load figure as your guide.

Workholding and Coolant Notes

Most finishing work on a grinder starts with a magnetic chuck, and the chuck you choose decides what the machine can do. A fine-pole chuck suits small, thin parts; a wide-pole chuck holds heavy plates more securely. Whatever you fit, grind the chuck itself in position on the table before production work, and re-grind it if you remove and refit it. On the coolant side, keep the fluid clean and topped up: grinding dust in a neglected tank is the fastest way to scratch a finished surface, and coolant condition affects the finish as much as the wheel grade does.

Which Size Makes Sense

Match the table to your most common plate size, not your largest ever job. If most of your plates sit under 450 mm square, the 460 mm machines cover you comfortably. If you regularly face 600 mm plates, the 306AHD/AS saves you from double setups, and a double setup on a grinder means re-clamping marks and flatness errors you then have to grind out again. Check the machine height against your shop headroom as well, since the largest model stands over two metres tall.
