Precision S Series Turret Mill with Hardened Ways

Precision S series turret milling machine, models 35 to 5S, with hardened ground ways, tables to 1370 x 280 mm, 16-speed head and R8/NT30 or NT40 taper.

A turret mill is only as good as its ways. Worn or soft slideways show up as backlash, chatter and parts that drift off size as the machine ages. The VITOP Precision S series turret milling machine, four models from 35 to 5S, takes the standard turret mill formula and builds it on hardened and ground ways, for shops that need manual milling to hold accuracy year after year.

What Hardened Ground Ways Change

Hardened and ground slideways resist wear far better than as-machined surfaces, and the grinding operation itself produces a flat, straight bearing surface that a cut way cannot match. In daily use that means steadier gibs, less backlash to compensate for, and cuts that stay where you dial them in. For toolroom work, where the mill often finishes surfaces that nothing else will touch afterwards, that stability is the whole point of the machine.

Sizes and Travels

The series uses 1270 x 254 x 90 mm or 1370 x 280 x 90 mm worktables. Longitudinal travel spans 740 to 950 mm depending on model, cross travel 370 to 415 mm and vertical travel 340 to 385 mm. Spindle nose to table distance reaches 550 mm on the largest model, giving generous room under the head for tall fixtures and housings.

Head, Speeds and Tapers

The 16-step head covers 66 to 4530 r/min or 80 to 5440 r/min depending on model. The low speeds let you swing a large cutter or drill in steel with the full motor behind it; the high end handles small end mills in aluminium and brass. Taper options are R8 with NT30, or NT40 on the bigger machines. NT40 is the choice if you want the stiffest setup for heavier cuts; R8 suits lighter, faster tool changes at friendly tooling prices.

Motors run from 3 to 5 HP across the range. That is enough power for solid milling in mild and medium steel at sensible depths, which covers the large majority of toolroom and maintenance jobs.

Typical Applications

  • Precision toolroom milling: gauges, die sections, fixtures
  • Finishing faces on mould and die components
  • Accurate drilling, boring and reaming on the table
  • Maintenance milling where tolerances still matter

Keeping the Accuracy You Paid For

Hardened ways wear slowly, but gibs and leadscrews still need attention. Check the gibs for smooth, even drag every few months and adjust them slightly rather than a lot; an over-tight gib wears fast, a loose one ruins finish. Keep the slideways oiled on schedule and wipe the table clean at the end of each shift, since chips ground into the way surfaces do more wear in a week than a year of honest cutting. A turret mill maintained this way stays a finishing machine instead of quietly becoming a roughing machine.

S Series or E Series?

Both series share the turret mill concept and similar capacity. Choose the Standard E series when the work is general machining, repair and training, and cost is the deciding factor. Choose the Precision S series when the machine will produce finishing cuts on accurate parts, when you expect high utilisation over many years, or when wear resistance on the ways directly affects the work you sell. Machine weight ranges from 1280 to 1900 kg, so no special foundation is needed, just a level floor and a stable spot away from vibration sources.
